The Monument of the Grey Buses
Historical Backgrounds

Commemoration

The history of the Weissenau clinic during National Socialism should not be forgotten. Therefore, the City of Ravensburg and the Centre for Psychiatry Südwürttemberg in Weissenau remember the victims of the so-called “euthanasia” with a monument. In addition to the joint events organized by the city and the named clinic, there are school events, which have been carried out for many years in the context of the International Day of Holocaust Remembrance on 27 January. More recent medical-historical research reports about a close link between the murder of the mentally ill and the murder of the European Jews during National Socialism.

In July 2005, there was a competition for a monument dedicated to the victims of the so-called euthanasia. The competition was held in Ravensburg. Eight artists were invited to take part in the process and to draft proposals for a monument. Both the city of Ravensburg and the Centre for Psychiatry at Weissenau provided the funds required for the realization of both the competition and the project.
